Cinco de Mayo, or the Fifth of May, is celebrated across the United States, with over 70% of Americans participating in the holiday to some extent. It is wildly popular for embracing Mexican culture and food, with many of these festivities taking place in the home and backyard.
Did you know?: Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army defeating the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Formal celebrations of the battle began in the United States in 1863, with several California cities bordering Mexico participating. Congress called for official observance of Cinco De Mayo in 2005.

Authentic Food
Traditionally, Cinco de Mayo celebrates somewhat-commercialized Mexican food: tacos, nachos, and other Tex-Mex combinations. We would never pass an opportunity to enjoy a good taco, but there is another traditional food menu item that is almost unheard of. Mole poblano is a dish originating in Puebla, Mexico, and consists of a gravy-like sauce over pork, turkey, or chicken. This can be used as a filling for tamales or as a main dish, with spices and ingredients varying.
Decorations
Cinco de Mayo is characterized by bright, colorful décor and clothing. Decorate your outdoor space with pops of pink, red, green, and other colors of preference. You can inflate balloons, put out brightly colored tablecloths, and set up a piñata for guests of all ages to enjoy. You can also fill your pool with brightly colored floats and games for all ages.
Drinks
Margaritas automatically come to mind with traditional Cinco de Mayo festivities. While tequila-based drinks are the most popular, there are other drinks to represent Mexican heritage that you can incorporate into festivities. Horchata is a white rice based drink sweetened with cinnamon and sugar.
